Chapter 14

Paul Benson took the back road out to the farm, pulled the car off the road and into a small copse of trees and entered Gus Perrin’s extensive domain on foot. Technically this was a public footpath and Gus Perrin was careful to maintain it according to his legal obligations. In summer, hikers and families could cross the field behind the house, enjoying the birds and the hedgerows and the wildflower meadow, most of them in total ignorance of their close proximity to organized crime. A small gate led off this path and up towards the house. An equally small and very discreet notice announcing that this was private property warned off the hikers, and an infrared sensor alerted those inside the house should anyone happen to stray. Benson knew that Gus Perrin would have been alerted and would be waiting for him.

He took a straight route across the lawns and spotted Perrin sitting in his wheelchair in the large conservatory at the back. Perrin saw him at the same moment and raised a glass invitingly. Minutes later, somewhat relieved, Paul was seated opposite him nursing a glass of whiskey.

“How goes it?” Perrin asked. “I hear our man is making waves.”

“He’s totally off his nut,” Benson told him.

“No change there, then.”

Benson shook his head. “Oh, everything is changed. The man could at least be relied on to put business first, now it’s all about just what he fancies doing, and that changes moment to moment. I tell you, he’s lost it. He was dangerous before, now he’s just . . .” He shrugged helplessly.

He could feel his boss regarding him closely, considering. He knew Gus Perrin had little patience with shows of weakness, but he also knew that he had been a trusted Perrin employee for a long time and that Gus would at least listen.

“He knows I’m still reporting to you, I’m sure of it.”

“Of course he knows. The man might be off his rocker but he’s not stupid. Or at least not stupid that way.”

“Truth is—” Benson found it hard to say but knew he must — “I don’t know what the fuck he’s going to do one minute to the next. He killed that kid, Gus. That was never in the script. Ricky Evans had a scheme going, but it was business, it didn’t involve murdering little kids. I want out, Gus.”

Gus Perrin laughed. “Out of the question, and coming from you, squeamishness seems a little, how shall we say, misplaced. Hypocritical maybe?”

Benson scowled at him. “I never killed kids.”

“No, you just tortured a policeman to death, attempted to kill another, and, well, we’ll gloss over the rest, shall we?”

Benson was about to retort but he saw Gus’s expression change and held back.

“No, but you’re right. His behaviour is extravagant, even for Kyle Sykes. So you’d better do what you can to control it, hadn’t you?”

“Might be too late for that. He had something else lined up.”

“Like what?”

“I don’t know. He’s not always the confiding type, only when it suits him and only then when it’s going to get a reaction.
